Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has criticised the political system in the United States, claiming that the country’s legislative arm appears powerless before President Donald Trump on matters requiring their consent.

Sani made the remark in a post shared on his verified X account on Sunday while reacting to the ongoing tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran.

The conflict escalated after the United States and Israel reportedly launched air strikes on Iran on February 28, an attack that allegedly resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, and several senior government officials.

Reacting to the development, Sani argued that the US Senate and Congress appear to have been sidelined in decisions where their approval should ordinarily be required.

According to him, American lawmakers now appear to rely on social media to express their frustration and opposition to presidential actions.

“The US Senate and Congress are ignored by the President on matters where their consent is needed. They appeared powerless and now resort to social media to express their outrage and anger,” Sani said.

The former lawmaker further questioned when American legislators would visit developing countries again to lecture them on democracy, constitutionalism, the rule of law and freedom.
