NYSC to post corps members across West Africa

The National Youth Service Corps appears to be considering the deployment of corps members to the 16 member states of the Economic Community of West African State, judging by a suggestion at its top management retreat, which held in Suleja, Niger State.

The proposition was given to the NYSC by a lecturer with the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, Prof Oka Obono, while delivering his keynote speech titled; “Strategies for Sustaining the NYSC in a Changing World,” at the retreat.

Obono cited the reduction of unemployment among youths in Nigeria as well as regional exposure part of the core advantages of his proposition, suggesting for all stakeholders to embrace expansion strategies that would be beneficial to youths.

“Expand operations to the West African region thereby reducing internal graduate unemployment and reducing pressures on the Nigerian labour market,” Prof Obono told the NYSC management.

Further describing inter-ethnic distrust as the bane of Nigeria’s problems, Obono lauded the NYSC Director-General, Brig Gen Shuaibu Ibrahim for his leadership style since assuming duty as the 18th DG of NYSC.

He called for stakeholders to adopt a high level of diplomacy and advocacy towards positively engaging unlearned youths, who are potential threats to societal peace and national development.

In his remark, Gen Shuaibu Ibrahim stated that the retreat was a platform for the scheme’s appraisal of its operations by the top management, saying the scheme “will intensify more on our proactive disposition to official engagements to move the Scheme Forward”

There are indications the NYSC will consider the proposition by Obono going a release by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs Adenike Adeyemi.
