On Thursday night, Barcelona confirmed that Lionel Messi is leaving the club after 21 years.

Messi traveled to Barca on that same day with expectations to agree on the details of the announcement of his new five-year deal.

The meeting was also to discuss preparations for the Joan Gamper Trophy game on Sunday. The Argentine was home in Barcelona, analyzing the circumstances of his present and future, not excluding the past. He reached a conclusion about options he is yet to explore alongside the counsel of his father and agent Jorge. Messi finalized the decision in the agreement.

All through these 21 years, he didn’t just set records in the club but also worldwide. He has won six Ballon d’Or; 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, and 2019.

Also, in history, he is the only player to win the Ballon d’Or, FIFA World Player, Pichichi Trophy, and Golden Boot in the same season. It happened in the 2009/10 season. Speaking in a press conference on Friday morning, President Joan Laporta laid out the deep financial mess that has meant they cannot afford a new contract for the 34-year-old.

Messi had no plans of leaving; he wanted to stay in Barcelona. He was not even considering any other club this summer.

Messi and his father, manager, are now looking for another club interested in having Messi on their team. In a few days to come, they will be ready to receive offers.
