“The removal of this al-Qaeda senior leader will disrupt the terrorist organisation’s ability to further plot and carry out global attacks threatening US citizens, our partners, and innocent civilians,” US Army Major John Rigsbee said in a written statement late on Friday.

“Al-Qaeda continues to present a threat to America and our allies. Al-Qaeda uses Syria as a safe haven to rebuild, coordinate with external affiliates, and plan external operations,”

Rigsbee did not say whether the US drone strike was carried out in a retaliatory attack. He also did not specify where in Syria the strike was carried out.

Recall, In September, the Pentagon also carried out a strike in rebel-held northwestern Syria, killing another senior al-Qaeda figure, Salim Abu-Ahmad.

The previous airstrike took place near the governorate of Idlib.

Large parts of Idlib and neighboring Aleppo are still in the hands of the Syrian armed opposition, which is led by groups such as the once-al-Qaeda-linked Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.

The ongoing conflict in Syria has resulted in a complex battlefield involving foreign armies, militias, and other armed groups affiliated with al-Qaeda, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS), and other affiliated groups.

Since the war began in 2011 with a brutal crackdown on anti-government protests, the war has killed approximately 500,000 people.
