UN Chief Warns China And United States to Avoid Another Cold War

United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres has warned of a possible new cold war between China and the United States, urging the two great powers to fix their “totally broken” relationship.

Before the annual gathering of world leaders, Antonio Guterres urged China and the United States to heal their “totally broken” relationship.

“We must avoid at all costs a new cold war, which would be different from the previous one, and probably more destructive and difficult to manage,” Guterres said ahead of the annual UN General Assembly meeting of world leaders, which has been blighted by COVID, climate concerns, and political divisions around the world.

Despite persistent political splits about human rights, economics, online security, and sovereignty in the South China Sea, Guterres said the world’s two largest economic powers should cooperate on climate and negotiate more vigorously on trade and technology.

He said “Unfortunately, today we only have a confrontation,”

“We need to re-establish a functional relationship between the two powers, it’s essential to address the problems of vaccination, the problems of climate change, and many other global challenges that cannot be solved without constructive relations within the international community and mainly among the superpowers”.
