Aston Villa manager, Dean Smith has been given a sack following a 1-0 loss to Southampton on Friday.

Smith joined AVFC from Brentford in October 2018 and had his contract terminated after three years of being in charge.

The dismissal followed the 50-year-old’s poor start to this season’s campaign.

The former Brentford coach suffered consecutive defeats in his last five games.

The Claret & Blue Army who are two places above the relegation zone have amassed just 10 points from 11 league games so far.

Contrastingly, the manager had secured 11th place for his men who gathered 55 points at the end of last season.

Smith took the club from 14th in the Championship to the Premier League via the play-offs during his first season in charge.

He also led the team to the EFL Cup final last year, but were beaten 2-1 by Manchester City.

Christian Purslow, Villa’s CEO said:“…For this reason, we have decided to make a change now to allow time for a new head coach to make an impact.”

“The board would like to sincerely thank Dean for his many excellent achievements, on and off the pitch, during this time. Everyone knows how much Aston Villa means to Dean and his family.”

“He has represented the club with distinction and dignity – universally liked and respected by everybody associated with Aston Villa – our staff, players and supporters alike. We wish him the very best.”
