The Nasarawa State Government has placed a ban on the use and sale of charcoal in the state in a bid to protect the environment.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Mr. Aliyu Agwai made this known during a press briefing held in Lafia over the weekend.

According to him, the process of producing charcoal is harmful to the environment, and it possesses the ability to destroy the climate and increase global warming.

He said:

“Cutting trees can result in the loss of habitat for animal species, which can harm the ecosystems.

“Almost all the land animals and plants live in forests and many cannot survive the deforestation that destroys their homes.”

He further warned all who are into selling of charcoal to desist from the act so as to avoid being prosecuted.
