The Nigeria Football Federation announced the reconstitution of the technical crew of the Senior Men National Team, Super Eagles, on Monday, with Augustine Eguavoen remaining as Interim Technical Adviser and Emmanuel Amuneke was drafted in as an immediate assistant to Eguavoen.

Amuneke, one of Nigeria’s most decorated footballers, scored both goals in the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations final match against Zambia in Tunis, scored the goal that won Nigeria and Africa’s first Olympic football gold medal in 1996, and played in the 1994 and 1996 FIFA World Cup finals, scoring two goals in USA ’94.

Next month, the Black Stars of Ghana will play in a potentially explosive FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 play-off round.

“We acknowledge and appreciate Mr. Jose Peseiro’s interest in Nigeria Football during our very cordial discussions, and we have absolutely no doubt about his capacity,” Sanusi added.

We believe that there may be an opportunity to work with him in the future.

However, in light of the Super Eagles’ positive performance at the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations, which has given Nigerians hope and boosted our confidence in the current coaching crew to qualify us for the World Cup in Qatar, we have decided to accept the Technical and Development Committee’s recommendation to retain the Eguavoen-led coaching crew and strengthen it with Amuneke.
