Following Will Smith’s on-stage hit on comedian Chris Rock, the Academy Awards took to Twitter to say that it doesn’t condone violence.
It said:
“The Academy does not condone violence of any form.
Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy Awards winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world.”

Smith slapped Chris Rock in the face during the Oscars on Sunday night after the comedian made a joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair.
He said:
“Jada, can’t wait for GI Jane 2.”
Following Rock’s remark, Smith walked up to the stage, hit him then returned to his seat and shouted: “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth.”
Lady Smith had previously discussed her battle with hair loss and alopecia. In an episode of her Red Table Talk Facebook chat show, she stated that “handfuls of hair” came loose in the shower.
Smith went on to win the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in King Richard, an American biographical sports drama about the father and coach of famed tennis players Venus and Serena Williams.
While accepting his best actor award, Smith apologized.
He said:
“I want to apologize to the Academy,” Smith said. “I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying for winning an award. It’s not about winning an award for me. It’s about being able to shine a light on all of the people. Tim and Trevor and Zack and Saniyya and Demi and Aunjanue and the entire cast and crew of ‘King Richard,’ Venus and Serena, the entire Williams family. Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams.”
