The United Kingdom has said it has listed at least 10 Nigerians for visa ban for “undermining democracy”.
This was made known by Ben Llewellyn-Jones, British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, during an interview with Nigeria Info.
The UK also criticised the spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress’ presidential campaign, Femi Fani-Kayode over derogatory and controversial comments made in the heat of the electoral season.
Fani-Kayode has gone under severe scrutiny for going hard on oppositions while marketing the presidential candidate of his party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who eventually won the election.
He was invited by the Department of State Services (DSS) for questioning after alleging that Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), entered a meeting with military hierarchy prior to the elections.
On the events that shaped the build-up to the election, Llewellyn-Jones said it was wrong for the APC spokesman to say many things.
Llewellyn-Jones also revealed that the UK government will issue visa bans to Nigerians undermining democracy in the country.
The British High Commissioner noted that about 10 person have already been listed for sanctioning.
He said;
“Yes, let’s be specific, there were some people, like Femi Fani-Kayode, what is he saying and why is he saying it? I don’t understand.
“It is wrong from my perspective that he will speak on behalf of a party and that party does not distance itself from him and say stop doing that. It is wrong to say that.
“We have a list, we are working through our list but we don’t publish those names. I know people say we should, but we have laws, and the law prevents us from doing that.
“At the moment the list is between 5 and 10 and it is growing.”
