Tragedy has struck the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State, as a female student, Joy Adeyemi, was discovered dead in her off-campus apartment after allegedly being stabbed by her boyfriend.
Joy, a student of the Department of Human Kinetics, was reportedly murdered on Tuesday, but her decomposing body was only found over the weekend following a foul odour that raised suspicion among her neighbours.
Confirming the grim discovery, a fellow student identified simply as Kunle said the boyfriend fled town after committing the crime.

He said,
“Her boyfriend killed her on Tuesday and locked her body inside the room. It was her neighbours who raised the alarm when they perceived a bad odour from her room. We are yet to know the reason the guy killed that lady.
“The lady operates POS in that area, but since Tuesday, she has disappeared and nobody knew her whereabouts until yesterday when the neighbours were perceiving a bad odour. They discovered that she had been stabbed to death by her boyfriend. The boy, after killing her, went away with the money she used for her POS business.”
This incident follows the recent killings of two other students of the university — Andrel Okah from the Department of History and International Studies, and John Abba from the Department of Economics — who were allegedly kidnapped and murdered by their landlord and accomplices. While some suspects have been arrested, the alleged mastermind, identified as Tallex, reportedly died in police custody.
Outraged by the spate of killings, students took to the streets of Akungba-Akoko on Saturday in protest, accusing local residents of targeting students. They carried placards bearing inscriptions such as ‘At Akungba Akoko, Say No to Students Killing’ and ‘Stop Killing Us’, while calling on the state government to take swift action.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Committee, also condemned the series of killings and demanded urgent government intervention.
In a statement signed by its chairman and secretary, Adekanye Adeboye and Oladele Emmanuel, the committee stated:
“As a body saddled with the responsibility of overseeing the general affairs and welfarism of all Nigerian students, we strongly condemn these heinous acts and demand immediate action from the Ondo State Government and all security operatives responsible for safeguarding lives and property within the state.”
Confirming the murder, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, said three suspects have already been arrested in connection with Joy’s killing, and that efforts were ongoing to apprehend her fleeing boyfriend.
Meanwhile, the university has urged calm among the student body. The Head of Media and Protocols of AAUA, Mr. Victor Akinpelumi, appealed to students not to resort to violence or vigilante action.
“We understand the pain and frustration, but we urge our students not to take the law into their own hands. Let the police be allowed to conduct a thorough investigation,” he said.
