Accounting icon, Pa Akintola Williams has died at the age of 104.

Williams, a leading accountant had celebrated his 104th birthday on August 9.

He was said to have been the first sub-Saharan African to become a chartered accountant, having passed the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW) qualification examination in 1949.

The Icon played a leading role in the development of the accounting profession in Nigeria by facilitating the establishment of the Institute of Accountants of Nigeria, which morphed into the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).

He then became a founding member of ICAN and was also involved in the establishment of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (now the Nigerian Exchange Group).

An experienced administrator, Williams was an accomplished accountant, business consultant, and serial entrepreneur during his working days.

After receiving his early education in Nigeria, Williams earned a Bachelor of Commerce (majoring in Banking and Finance) from the University of London in 1946 and subsequently qualified as a Chartered Accountant in the United Kingdom.

From 1950 until 1952, he worked as a tax officer for the Inland Revenue Service, after which he left the civil service in 1952 and joined Africa’s first indigenous accounting firm, Akintola, Williams & Company (now Deloitte & Touche Nigeria.)
