Calls for suspension of salary hike; urges focus on improving citizens’ welfare and raising minimum wage.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has opposed the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) plan to raise salaries of political office holders, calling it tone-deaf amid Nigeria’s economic challenges.
ADC national publicity secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, condemned the proposal, noting that while the RMAFC has a constitutional mandate to review salaries, the timing is insensitive as millions of Nigerians face rising food prices, fuel costs, and inadequate minimum wage.
The party argued that office holders already benefit from sundry allowances, perks, and discretionary funds, which far exceed the earnings of ordinary citizens.

Abdullahi said, “For perspective, our national minimum wage stands at N70,000 per month — a figure that has been largely eroded by inflation, even where it has been paid. Yet, unlike public office holders, most Nigerians do not receive additional allowances or emoluments to cushion the effects of the rising costs of living.”
ADC demanded the immediate suspension of the proposed salary increase, insisting that government policies should instead prioritize timely payment of civil servants, social welfare programs, and a living standard minimum wage.
