Warns US against military escalation, urges diplomacy and cooperation
The United States chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has written to U.S. President Donald Trump, rejecting claims of a Christian genocide in Nigeria and cautioning against any military intervention.
In a letter dated November 5, 2025, and signed by its chairman, Professor Tai Balofin, the APC USA chapter described the genocide narrative as a politically motivated exaggeration aimed at influencing Nigeria’s 2027 elections.

The group commended Trump’s advocacy for global religious freedom but urged that the recent U.S. designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” be reviewed in light of the reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
According to the letter, what is often portrayed as “religious genocide” largely stems from deep-rooted communal conflicts over land, water, and grazing routes — issues that have historically involved both Christians and Muslims.
The chapter cited the June 2025 Yelwata massacre in Benue State, where over 200 villagers were killed, noting that Tinubu’s prompt visit to the scene and directive for arrests under terrorism and murder laws demonstrated a fair and unbiased government response.
“This swift response reflects an unequivocal zero-tolerance stance against impunity, regardless of faith,” the letter stated.
The group warned that some international reports were being influenced by local politicians seeking to weaponise Nigeria’s security challenges for electoral advantage.
It also cautioned that misleading narratives could undermine investor confidence and harm a long-standing U.S.–Nigeria partnership.
“Military escalation could inadvertently destabilise a vital partner, inflame divisions, and embolden the extremists both nations seek to defeat,” the letter added.
The APC USA Chapter reaffirmed its willingness to serve as a liaison between U.S. policymakers and credible Nigerian stakeholders to ensure that future diplomatic actions are based on verified facts rather than politically motivated distortions.
