  • Nigerian Army’s 6 Division has destroyed 32 illegal refineries and arrested 15 suspected oil thieves in the Niger Delta region.

  • The operations, conducted between January 6 and 12, 2025, also resulted in the recovery of over 60,000 liters of stolen petroleum products.

Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Division have destroyed 32 illegal refineries, arrested 15 suspected oil thieves, and recovered over 60,000 liters of stolen petroleum products in the Niger Delta region.The operations, conducted in collaboration with other security agencies, took place between January 6 and 12, 2025, across various states in the region.

According to the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 6 Division, Lt. Col. Jonah Danjuma, “Troops of 6 Division with other security agencies have scaled up the operational momentum.

These efforts resulted in the destruction of 32 artisanal refineries, deactivation of 14 boats used for criminality, arrest of 15 oil thieves, and the recovery of over 60,000 litres of stolen products.”

The operations extended to several areas, including Degema Local Government Area, where seven illegal refining sites were discovered, and the Imo River stretch, where 10 illegal refining sites were deactivated.

Troops also intercepted three boats loaded with over 12,000 litres of stolen crude oil and arrested three suspects.

The General Officer Commanding, 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Jamal Abdussalam, praised the troops for their efforts, saying, “I encourage you to sustain the momentum to ensure an increase in oil production and foster a conducive environment for seamless exploration activities.”

Abdussalam reiterated the Army’s commitment to denying criminals freedom of action in the region, as part of broader efforts to safeguard the nation’s economic resources.

Over 1,000 soldiers have resigned from the Nigerian Army over the past four years, raising questions about the challenges facing the nation’s military forces.

According to official records, from 2020 to 2024, 1,008 soldiers voluntarily left the Army, a trend that has drawn significant attention.
