Banyana Banyana Makes History, Advances to World Cup Knockouts

Banyana Banyana secured their spot in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup knockouts with a thrilling 3-2 win against Italy at Wellington Regional Stadium on Wednesday.

In an emotional match, Banyana celebrated their first-ever World Cup victory, finishing second in Group G and advancing to the last-16.

Italy took the lead early on through Ariana Caruso, but Banyana got a lifeline when Benedetta Orsi scored an own goal in the 32nd minute.

The second half was filled with drama as Hildah Magaia’s 67th-minute strike put Banyana ahead, only to be countered by Caruso’s deflection of Valentina Giacinti’s header, levelling the score.

Thembi Kgatlana clinched victory for South Africa in stoppage time, finally managing to defend their lead.

Facing a demoralized Italy, recovering from a 5-0 defeat to Sweden, South Africa struggled to capitalize on their psychological advantage but ultimately emerged victorious.

Italy’s penalty came after Karabo Dhlamini fouled Chiara Beccari at the edge of the box, and hope was restored for Banyana through Orsi’s own goal.

Italy dominated the first half, resulting in a 1-1 tie at halftime, but Banyana looked improved in the early moments of the second half, displaying promising attacks despite their finishing struggles.

Magaia’s goal, assisted by Thembi Kgatlana, finally rewarded Banyana for their efforts.

Caruso, however, equalized once more for Italy from a corner kick, setting up a nail-biting finish.

It was then Kgatlana who came to Banyana’s rescue, scoring again and providing an assist to Magaia.

Italy’s failure to maintain their initial lead and prevent Banyana from taking the lead again after equalizing left the entire Azzurri team disappointed.

Needing only a draw to progress, Italy fell short, while Banyana now prepares to face the Netherlands in the Round of 16 on Sunday.
