A Lagos-based cosmetic surgeon, Dr Idara Bassey, has been taken into police custody in connection with the tragic death of a 36-year-old woman who underwent a buttock enlargement procedure at her clinic in Lekki Phase 1.
According to the State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, Bassey is currently being investigated at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Panti.
The incident occurred on August 26, 2024, when the victim, Abiola, died during the Brazilian Butt Lift surgery at his clinic.
Dr Bassey had initially fled the scene, but was later arrested including the nurse who administered the fatal injection.

Furthermore, the police have confirmed that Dr Bassey’s clinic is under investigation, and she is expected to face charges once the inquiry is complete.
Notably, the procedure, which involves transferring fat from other parts of the body to the buttocks, has been widely criticized by medical experts due to its potential risks.
In 2019, a similar case occurred in Istanbul, where a 31-year-old British woman died during a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) surgery.
A subsequent British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) report disclosed the lack of informed consent and inadequate risk assessment in such procedures.
