Bella Shmurda, a Nigerian singer, has publicly criticized Wizkid and Burna Boy for their comments disparaging Afrobeats, urging them to refrain from such actions.

The controversy stemmed from recent statements made by Burna Boy and Wizkid disassociating themselves from Afrobeats. Burna Boy claimed that Afrobeats lacks “substance” and identified his music as Afrofusion, while Wizkid expressed a reluctance to be categorized solely as an Afrobeats artist.

In a recent appearance on the London 90 podcast, Bella Shmurda addressed the issue, emphasizing the importance of Nigerian artists showing respect for Afrobeats. He revealed that he had remained silent on the matter for a while to avoid getting embroiled in the controversy.

He said, “Recently, I heard something, I saw something that made me feel bad. I wanted to tweet but I don’t want to be in a position whereby I have issues with people.

“But for real, We artistes should respect Afrobeats. This is our genre, we can’t downgrade it. No matter your level in the music industry, you can’t downgrade this thing that God has given us.”
