Governor Mai Mala Buni on Yobe State has escaped death following an attack on his convoy by members of Boko Haram sect.

Daily Report Nigeria reports that Governor Buni’s convoy was attacked by the terrorists on Saturday along the Maiduguri-Kano express way.

The incident took place after the governor’s convoy was returning from the 24th convocation of the University of Maiduguri.

Buni’s convoy was ambushed by the terrorists who fired sporadically from both sides of the road heading to Damaturu.

The incident left a police officer dead, while six other security operatives were wounded during the attack.

“We left Maiduguri very late, around 6.00 pm after Magrib prayer,” a source told newsmen.

“We were discussing and laughing when we were attacked along Beneshiekh and Mainok, after attending the 24th convocation of the University of Maiduguri.

“Governor Buni was with us in the convoy when the incident happened, after convocation he proceeded to Abuja for an official function,” the source added.

The incident was also confirmed by the spokesman of the governor, Mamman Mohammed, saying that governor’s security repelled the attack.

“The security operatives were able to repel the attack and that those injured were responding to treatment” he said.

Buni’s convoy was escorted by troops of Operation Hadin Kai, who were fully armed with MRAP, a Gun Truck and other security personnel including Police and DSS.

For many years the military has prohibited night travel on the Maiduguri-Damaturu way, warning the terrain is dangerous for commuters.
