- Legal Bombshell Hits Brazil FA—Rodrigues’s Presidency Voided.
A court in Rio de Janeiro has officially removed Ednaldo Rodrigues from his position as president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), stating that the employment agreement underpinning his role is legally invalid.
The judge concluded that the contract signed between Rodrigues and the CBF was “null and void,” leading to his immediate dismissal and adding another chapter to the ongoing leadership turbulence within Brazil’s football governing body.

Ednaldo Rodrigues’s time in charge of the CBF has been surrounded by legal challenges.
In 2023, he was suspended after a court discovered serious irregularities in the election that brought him into office in 2022.
That suspension was short-lived, however, as a Supreme Court judge reinstated him shortly afterward.
This reinstatement came following strong warnings from FIFA, the international football authority, which threatened to sanction Brazilian football if the country’s courts were found to be interfering in the internal affairs of its football institutions.
FIFA and CONMEBOL Oppose External Interference
Both FIFA and the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) refused to acknowledge Rodrigues’s earlier removal, viewing it as inappropriate outside interference.
They cautioned the CBF that allowing courts or political actors to influence the sport’s administration could lead to a ban from international tournaments.
These warnings placed tremendous pressure on Brazilian authorities to align with FIFA’s strict policies regarding football governance.
Attempt to Hire Ancelotti Falls Through
During his time in charge, Rodrigues spearheaded efforts to appoint Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti as the head coach of Brazil’s national team.

However, negotiations eventually collapsed, and the plan was shelved.
Interestingly, Ancelotti was officially named the new Brazil coach just this week, stepping into the role formerly held by Zinedine Zidane.
2025 Contract Questioned by Court
The recent court decision is linked to a new contract signed by Rodrigues that was set to run until 2025.
The court found that one of the people who authorized the contract on behalf of the CBF was mentally unfit to do so at the time.
This revelation raised questions about the legitimacy of the entire agreement and led the judge to describe it as potentially “forged,” further complicating Rodrigues’s position and credibility.
Rodrigues Defends Himself at FIFA Meeting
Ahead of the court’s ruling, Rodrigues addressed journalists during a FIFA gathering in Asuncion, Paraguay.
He expressed full confidence in the legality of the contract, stating that he had “absolute certainty” the agreement was valid.
However, the court’s decision directly contradicts his claim, and the fallout is expected to spark fresh debate within the CBF and possibly invite another round of scrutiny from FIFA.
Implications for Brazil’s Football Future
This legal development throws Brazil’s football leadership into fresh uncertainty, especially with major international tournaments on the horizon.
Stability at the top is essential, and any appearance of political or judicial interference may trigger strong actions from FIFA.
Brazil’s football authorities must now decide how to proceed, balancing legal judgments at home with global football rules that prohibit external influence.
