BREAKING: Court Orders Arrest of INEC Chairman, Yakubu Mahmood | Daily Report Nigeria

An Abuja Area Court has ordered for the arrest of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Yakubu Mahmood.

The arrest order followed a sitting of the Federal Capital Territory Area Council Election Petition Tribunal, led by Chief Magistrate Folashade Oyekan, wherein the INEC Chairman was accused of contempt of court.

Ruling on an application by counsel to the petitioner, C. I Okoye Esq, the tribunal held that the willful refusal of Mahmood to obey an order of the court to produce documents requested of him on July 22, 2022 was a “flagrant disobedience”.

The tribunal said refusal to produce the documents named in a subpoena is liable to attract appropriate consequences under the law.

Magistrate Oyekan consequently ordered the Inspector General of Police, or the Commissioner of Police, FCT to arrest the INEC National Chairman, Mahmoud Yakubu, or anyone occupying that office immediately, and produce him before the tribunal on 29 July.

The tribunal was further adjourned to 29/7/2022, for the INEC Chairman to show cause why he should not be committed to prison for contempt of court.
