The 27-year-old has now emerged the first-ever Nigerian and the fourth African player to win the esteemed award.

Prior to Onuachu’s prime, Aruna Dindane from Ivory Coast has claimed the prize in 2003 before a Moroccan, Mbark Boussoufa grabbed his in 2006 and 2010.

D.R Congo’ star, Dieumerci Mbokani happened to be the 3rd and the last African player to clinch the honour in 2012 before Onuachu’s time.

The Genk’s forward, Onuachu was bestowed the honor for his superb performance last season in which he was unstoppable in front of goal.

The former Midtjylland star registered 29 league goals in the 2020/2021 session.

Also, he has scored twelve goals before he picked up an injury during the first half of the ongoing season.

The Nigerian attacker topped with 333 votes ahead of the Club Brugge duo, Noa Lang who had 272 votes and Charles De Ketelaere, with 271 votes.

The Owerri-born is currently battling with an injury that kept him out of the Eagles’ squad at the ongoing 33rd Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
