U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday July 7, resigned as the leader of the Conservative Party and effectively as prime minister.
This brings an end to a nearly three-year premiership that has been beset by controversy and scandal.
Mr Johnson made the announcement on Thursday afternoon at 10, Downing Street, London.
He, however, said he will remain in office until the Conservative Party elects a new leader who will also assume office as prime minister.
Johnson also noted that the process for choosing the new leader of the Conservative Party should begin with a timetable to be announced next week.
