Twelve Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) said to be on a special duty from Katsina to Zamfara have been abducted by suspected kidnappers.

Daily Report Nigeria gathered that the kidnapped operatives of the Nigerian Police Force were taken hostage on their way to Zamfara from Borno State.

According to the report confirmed by BBC Hausa, one of the officers had called his wife and demanded her to raise the sum of N1 million, stressing there would be trouble if she fails to raise the cash.

“He called me on Wednesday and told me that he was in the hands of the kidnappers.

“I can’t tell you I have any other information. We are in a state of frustration,” she was quoted by the BBC.

Efforts by the BBC to gather information from the Borno and Katsina police commands were greeted by denials from both parties, saying they have no knowledge of policeman being abducted.

However, popular columnist, Bulama Bukarti, took to Twitter and wrote:

“That officers were abducted together speaks volumes on the extremely scary situation developing in the Northwest.

“If police officers in police convoy could be abducted, what more of ordinary Nigerians with no arms, training or equipment? It’s clear that we are playing with fire”.

This could mean a new rise in the activities of insurgents in the North-West region of the country, which has been under the claws of the dreaded Boko Haram group in the best part of the last decade.
