Buhari seeks confirmation, Renew Membership of Monetary Policy Committee

President Muhammadu Buhari asked the Senate on Tuesday in Abuja to confirm and renew the membership of the Monetary Policy Committee, MPC, of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

This comes as the President also sent a bill to the National Assembly to reposition digital technology in Nigeria.

The confirmation request was included in a letter dated February 23rd, 2022, and addressed to Senate President Dr. Ahmad Lawan.

The Senate President read the letter during plenary on Tuesday.

President Buhari explained in the letter that the confirmation and membership renewal request was made in accordance with Section 12(4) of the Central Bank Act, 2007.

He also asked for the confirmation of two new nominees and the renewal of five Monetary Policy Committee members.

Prof. Mohammed Adaya Salisu and Dr. Mo’Omamegbe are the two new nominees for confirmation.

Prof. Michael Obadan, Prof. Festus Adeola Adenikinju, Prof. Aliyu Sanusi Rafindadi, Dr. Robert Asogwa, and Alhaji Aliyu Ahmed are among those up for renewal.

Meanwhile, President Buhari’s Startup Bill was accompanied by a letter dated February 21, 2022, and was read aloud during plenary by the Senate President.

The President explained in the letter that the Startup bill aims to position the country’s Startup Ecosystem and to create a National Council for Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

“Pursuant to Sections 58(2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I hereby forward The Nigeria Startup Bill, 2021 for the kind consideration of the Senate,” the letter says.

The Nigeria Startup Bill, 2021 seeks to establish a National Council for Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship in order to position Nigeria’s Startup ecosystem as the leading digital technology center in Africa, with excellent innovators with cutting-edge skills and exportable capacity, in order to accomplish this, the Bill proposes the formation of a National Council for Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
