At least eight directors at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) are going to be asked to retire early this week.

Some of these directors were moved to another part of the bank under the Governor’s Directorate and have been waiting for further instructions since November 24, 2023.

While some have already received their retirement letters since March 15, 2024, it is not clear whether they were retired or let go from the CBN.

It is also unclear if these directors have been found guilty of any wrongdoing.

Reliable sources indicated that these officials are being asked to leave because they worked closely with the former governor of the bank, Mr Godwin Emefiele.

The news has been circulating since last week and has caused concern among CBN staff, who are worried that it might lead to more layoffs by the current management.

A source said:

We don’t know whether they were given early retirement or their appointments were terminated outright.

“…because they had worked very closely with the immediate past governor of the bank, Mr. Godwin Emefiele.”
