A cleaner, Faiza Abdulkadir, who returned ₦4.8 million mistakenly credited to her account, has received a ₦2.5 million reward from a “good Samaritan.”

The cheque was presented on Monday in Maiduguri by Aisha Muhammad Aisami, president of the Da’awah Wal Irshaad Women Organisation, Borno State. Aisami explained that the anonymous donor had read Faiza’s story in Daily Trust Newspaper and decided to reward her honesty.

“We, therefore, present this cheque of ₦2.5 million to Faiza Abdulkadir, on behalf of our donor, who saw what she did, when somebody mistakenly sent ₦4.8 million into her account and she returned the money,” Aisami said.

She added: “Daily Trust newspaper carried the story, and it’s widely spread and the donor saw it. He is not from Borno State, he only read the story and sent the donations through us. May Allah SWT make her steadfast in what she did and reward the donor and all those who donated to her.”

Faiza, who works at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and supports her five children and elderly mother on a ₦30,000 salary, expressed her gratitude to both the donor and the organisation.

“If you fear God, anything that doesn’t belong to you would not attract you. We should always prepare for eternal life, hereafter, not to be deceived by the worldly gains that are temporary,” she said.

Her integrity has also attracted recognition from the Borno State Government. A week earlier, the First Lady, Dr. Falmata Babagana Zulum, gave her ₦1 million in cash, along with food items and vocational equipment.

The state Commissioner for Women Affairs, Zuwaira Gambo, praised Faiza’s decision, describing it as a remarkable act of honesty. “It’s a rare and inspiring display of integrity, which shows that honesty is not determined by wealth but character,” she said.

Seven days earlier, Faiza, a resident of Gwange, Zawiyya of Sheikh Ibrahim Saleh, had received the mistaken transfer from a man in Kebbi State. After the rightful owner contacted her, she went through a three-day process to ensure the funds were returned.

“The money does not belong to me. I returned it to have peace of mind, and avoid God’s punishment on the day of judgement,” Faiza explained.

She added: “I was restless throughout these three days. In fact, I couldn’t eat well throughout the process, until the day I finally transferred the money to the owner.”

Bank officials and locals have since described her as a woman of rare honesty, noting how significant her action is given her modest earnings.
