Colombian forward Javier Bolivar in hot water after video showed him slap referee Vanessa Ceballos during a midweek clash between Real Alianza Cataquera and Deportivo Quique.

The incident happened 21st minute into the second half after Ceballos brandished him a red card while Bolívar stood off the pitch; he then walked up, turned and hit her across the face.

Ceballos reacted instantly and tried to kick Bolívar before teammates and match officials pulled them apart.

One goalkeeper shoved Bolívar back as players swarmed the area.

The clip spread fast across social media as fans and pundits shared it, and many demanded immediate punishment.

Bolívar posted an apology on Instagram, describing his behaviour as “disrespectful and inappropriate.”

He said he hadn’t meant to strike the referee and was trying to grab the whistle, but he accepted responsibility and admitted his action was wrong.

“I firmly reject any form of violence, especially against women,” – he wrote, adding an apology to Ceballos, her family and anyone affected.

Colombian football authorities have launched an inquiry and will announce sanctions soon.

Given the clear video, officials will likely hand down a lengthy suspension to reinforce respect for match officials and deter future abuse.
