The Edo State House of Assembly has passed a bill to repeal the Rural Electricity Commission Act of 1972.
The bill will restore the law governing the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity to the people of the state.
When the law is assented to by Governor Godwin Obaseki, it will pave the way for the creation of an electricity market in the country.

Speaker Marcus Onobun directed the Secretary of State to send a clean copy of the bill to the state governor for assent.
The draft law will allow the liberalization of the national electricity market, allowing a more practical approach to rural electrification and the expansion of the national distribution infrastructure.
The passage of the bill meant that electricity consumers will benefit from proper regulation of the state’s electricity industry, which will provide operators with a more predictable business environment.
