Emmanuel Amuneke, a former Nigerian international, recently offered insights into why Victor Osimhen’s performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast fell short of expectations.
Osimhen, who was considered one of the frontrunners for the Golden Boot award, ended up scoring just one goal throughout the tournament.

This was in stark contrast to the high hopes pinned on him as Nigeria reached the AFCON final, only to suffer a 2-1 defeat against Ivory Coast last Sunday.
Addressing Osimhen’s performance, Amuneke shared his perspective in an interview with News Central TV.
“You know in this AFCON, Victor Osimhen spent a lot of time helping the team to defend, and when you have a striker that is so dangerous, move a lot and then at the end of the day he is coming to defend. I think it reduces his quality.
“Victor Osimhen is a player that when you look at him, moves a lot and needs players that can actually, you know, give him those balls into spaces where he can become effective and functional.”
