Nigeria’s political landscape was thrown into mourning on Saturday as news broke of the passing of retired Major General Godwin Osagie Abbe, a former Minister of Defence and Interior.

Abbe, who served as military governor of Akwa Ibom and Rivers states, died in Abuja after a protracted illness. He was 74 years old.

Edo State Senator, Monday Okpebholo, led the tributes, describing Abbe as a “legendary son of the state.” Okpebholo said, “His life was a testament to discipline, dedication, and service to the nation.”

The senator praised Abbe’s illustrious military career, which spanned several decades and included promotions to Lance Corporal, Lieutenant, and eventually Major General.

“General Godwin Osagie Abbe was a shining star whose light has been extinguished, but his legacy will continue to inspire and guide us,” Okpebholo said.
