On Thursday night, Barcelona confirmed that Lionel Messi is leaving the club after 21 years.

Messi traveled to Barca on that same day with expectations to agree on the details of the announcement of his new five-year deal.

The meeting was also to discuss preparations for the Joan Gamper Trophy game on Sunday. The Argentine was home in Barcelona, analyzing the circumstances of his present and future, not excluding the past. He reached a conclusion about options he is yet to explore alongside the counsel of his father and agent Jorge. Messi finalized the decision in the agreement.

All through these 21 years, he didn’t just set records in the club but also worldwide. He has won six Ballon d’Or; 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, and 2019.

Also, in history, he is the only player to win the Ballon d’Or, FIFA World Player, Pichichi Trophy, and Golden Boot in the same season. It happened in the 2009/10 season. Do you know he is the youngest player to win three Ballon d’Or? As of then, he was 24 years, six months, and 17 days old when he won the third on January 9, 2012.

In addition to his laurels, he is the player with the most Golden Shoes. He won six in the following years; 2009-10, 2011-12, 2012-13, 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2018-19 seasons. It is the longest scoring streak in the league. He has scored 33 goals in 21 consecutive matches from matchday 11 to 34 in the 2012/13 league season. All these are part of his achievements. There are still a whole lot of achievements not listed

Messi, who wasn’t expecting the news of his departure, made it known that he will now consider other offers. PSG is now showing interest with progress in negotiations to sign Messi. PSG believes they have a good chance in the competition pool.

On Thursday night, on the same day that Messi returned to Catalonia following his post-Copa America holiday, Barca announced that Messi is to leave the Nou Camp and conclude his 21-year association with the La Liga giants. Messi departs Barcelona after an association of over two decades with the club.

Messi thought everything was agreed and ready to go forward – but instead, Liga’s executive board made it impossible to register him in line with La Liga’s financial rules. Speaking in a press conference on Friday morning, President Joan Laporta laid out the deep financial mess that has meant they cannot afford a new contract for the 34-year-old.

Messi had no plans of leaving; he wanted to stay in Barcelona. He was not even considering any other club this summer.

Messi and his father, manager, are now looking for another club interested in having Messi on their team. In a few days to come, they will be ready to receive offers.
