FG Presents Houses, National Honours to D’Tigress After Afrobasket Triumph

The Federal Government has fulfilled its pledge to reward Nigeria’s women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, with houses and national honours following their triumph at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2025.

The official documents were presented on Monday in Lyon by the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, alongside the commission’s Director-General, Bukola Olopade, acting on behalf of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The rewards were first announced by the President after the team, led by head coach Rena Wakama, clinched the continental title in August 2025 in Côte d’Ivoire.

Speaking during the presentation, Dikko described the gesture as evidence of the government’s commitment to rewarding excellence in sports, noting that athletes now have renewed confidence that their achievements will be recognised promptly.

He commended the players for projecting Nigeria positively on the global stage through their dedication, discipline and patriotic spirit.

According to him, the monetary rewards promised by the President are already in the final stage of processing and will soon be disbursed to the beneficiaries.

Olopade also stated that the administration is repositioning sports development in line with international standards, adding that the prompt fulfilment of the pledge reflects the priority placed on athletes’ welfare.

President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, Musa Kida, expressed appreciation to the President for recognising the team’s success and supporting the growth of sports in the country.

Coach Wakama, in her remarks, thanked the government for the honour and assured Nigerians that the team would continue striving for greater achievements.

Team captain Amy Okonkwo also conveyed the appreciation of the players, pledging that D’Tigress would remain committed to representing the nation with pride in future competitions.
