The Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) has urged the Federal Government to take immediate action to halt the alarming and disheartening surge in killings, kidnappings, and banditry that have plagued the country over the past week.

In a statement released on Tuesday, NIREC, led by the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Daniel Okoh, and the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, who also serves as the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), decried the escalating insecurity in the nation.

The council, representing both Christian and Muslim communities, voiced its distress over the exponential rise in violent incidents.

NIREC’s Secretary, Cornelius Omonokhua said:

The current rate of banditry, abductions, and killings is beyond alarming and must be urgently addressed.

“This series of attacks within just one week is deeply troubling and of great concern.”

NIREC called on the Government and security agencies to intensify their efforts to eliminate these threats, ensuring that citizens can live their lives without fear.

The council also extended its condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and prayed for the safe return of those still held captive.

Recent reports disclosed the severity of the situation revealing that thirteen farmers were brutally killed in Shiroro LGA of Niger State.

Also, one hundred and fifty individuals were abducted in Gobir District of Sokoto State, the District Head of Gatawa in the same state was murdered, and a bandit attack was thwarted in Malumfashi LGA of Katsina State, among other incidents.
