Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup ambitions suffered a major setback after FIFA rejected the Nigeria Football Federation’s petition claiming the Democratic Republic of Congo fielded ineligible players during the November 2025 playoff matches.

The NFF confirmed the decision in a statement on Tuesday, noting that FIFA found insufficient evidence to overturn the match results.

Dissatisfied with the ruling, the federation has already filed an appeal with FIFA’s higher adjudicatory bodies.

The petition alleged that DR Congo violated FIFA eligibility rules regarding player nationality, documentation, and registration.

Despite the claims, FIFA’s disciplinary committee upheld DR Congo’s qualification, effectively ending Nigeria’s immediate pathway to the tournament.

An NFF spokesperson emphasized the importance of “sporting integrity” and assured that all legal options would be pursued.

Analysts warn that reversals at this stage are rare unless new, compelling evidence emerges.

The ruling has sparked widespread reactions online, with fans expressing frustration and former internationals calling for stronger administrative diligence to prevent future disputes. Sports administrators urged calm, stressing the need to focus on long-term team development.

Nigeria, a three-time African champion, risks both sporting and financial consequences if it misses the World Cup, including potential impacts on sponsorship, player visibility, and national team morale.

The outcome of the pending appeal remains a focal point for football stakeholders across the country.
