The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has closed down the Gomboru drug market in Maiduguri, Borno State.

NAFDAC’s decision comes after devastating floods in the state led to contaminated drugs being washed and sun-dried for resale.

The agency announced the closure on X, stating that the drugs had become compromised due to the flooding.

Recall that the recent flooding in Maiduguri has caused widespread destruction, with the Gomboru drug market being one of the affected areas.

The floods were triggered by the rupture of the Alau dam on the Ngadda River, which is located 20 kilometres south of Maiduguri.

Reports indicated that the severe flooding resulted in loss of life and property, with at least 30 deaths reported and over 400,000 people displaced.

The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, described the situation in Maiduguri as “frightening,” with around 40 per cent of the city being affected by the floods.

NEMA also reported that more than 23,000 households and over 150,000 people were impacted by the rapid rise of waters.

Furthermore, there are fears that the number of displaced people could reach up to one million.

In addition to the human toll, the flooding also led to other consequences, such as the escape of at least 286 inmates from the Maiduguri Medium Security Custodial Centre.

It also aided the death of approximately 80 per cent of the animals in the local zoo, with the remaining 20 per cent escaping into the metropolis.
