Football Kenya Federation has Suspended goalkeeper Patrick Matasi Over Match-Fixing Claims
Matasi has been suspended from all football activities for 90 days while authorities investigate claims of match-fixing.
The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) made the announcement on Thursday evening, confirming that an official inquiry has begun into the allegations against the Kenyan Premier League star.
Viral Video Sparks Match-Fixing Concerns
The controversy started when a video surfaced online, allegedly showing Matasi discussing ways to influence match results.
The 37-year-old goalkeeper, who plays for Kakamega Homeboyz, has been a key player for Kenya’s national team, earning 26 caps.
His performance in Kenya’s 4-1 defeat to Cameroon during the AFCON 2024 qualifiers has also raised concerns, as some of the goals conceded appeared questionable.
FKF and FIFA Pledge a Fair and Transparent Investigation
In response to the allegations, FKF released a statement emphasizing its commitment to fair play and integrity in football.
The federation assured fans and stakeholders that the investigation would be thorough and transparent, conducted in collaboration with FIFA, CAF, and other relevant organizations.
The federation stated as follows:
“The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is aware of the videos circulating online involving goalkeeper Patrick Matasi, raising concerns about possible match-fixing.”
“We take football integrity seriously and have launched an official investigation with FIFA, CAF, and other partners. FKF has a zero-tolerance policy on match manipulation and is dedicated to protecting the credibility of our competitions.” Added FKF.
The federation went further: “This investigation will follow FKF’s Anti-Match Manipulation Regulations and FIFA guidelines to ensure a fair and detailed review. The rights of the player and his club will be respected, and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings.”
“We encourage anyone with credible information to assist in this investigation. All reports will be handled confidentially. Information can be sent via [email protected].”
“Further updates will be shared as the investigation progresses.”
FKF has assured the public that it will take all necessary steps to protect the integrity of Kenyan football and ensure fair play in the league.
