Nigerian governors have strongly endorsed the creation of state police as a strategic measure to combat the growing insecurity across the country.

The proposal, which was discussed at the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima on Thursday, received the backing of 36 states, signaling broad support for state-controlled law enforcement.

The endorsement, shared by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani during a briefing with State House correspondents.

“Today, 36 states have submitted their positions, and most of us are in agreement with the establishment of state police in Nigeria,” Governor Sani announced.

The discussions, which focused on addressing the escalating security challenges in various parts of the country, are expected to culminate in a final resolution during the next NEC meeting in January 2025.

However, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), under the leadership of Nyesom Wike, did not submit its position, which delayed the final agreement.

Governor Sani highlighted the urgent need for state police, pointing to the challenges of ungoverned spaces and insufficient security personnel to adequately cover the vast expanse of the nation.

“There is a significant deficit in the number of boots on the ground. With many security agencies, including the police and military, unable to cover all regions, state police is a necessary step to address our insecurity concerns,” he explained.

The proposal has gained momentum in light of the diverse security challenges facing each state.
