Gunmen have reportedly attacked a convoy of vehicles and killed four policemen escorting an unknown Very Important Personality (VIP) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

During the attack, the gunmen kidnapped the VIP and made away with an undisclosed amount of money.

The incident was said to have happened around 3 pm on Thursday along the recently constructed Rumuokoro flyover in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

Reports stated that the gunmen, who were dressed in military uniform, shot sporadically before abducting the victim.

It was also learnt that the criminals laid ambush at the scene earlier and waited for the convoy.

According to an eyewitness, the gunmen operated freely without any interference, causing panic among people in the area.

He said:

“This afternoon, around 3pm. We heard gunshots on top of the flyover. We earlier thought it was security men that were shooting, because they were in military uniform.

“The shooting continued while cars that were at the foot of the flyover have to stop. They boys killed four policemen that were escorting a big man.

“They carried money from that convoy and kidnapped the big man. After that, they entered their own car and drove off.”

The Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, a Superintendent of Police, when contacted, confirmed the incident, saying three policemen were involved.
