At least four individuals have lost their lives due to an outbreak of acute viral haemorrhagic fever at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Kaduna State.

Reports held that among the victims are three healthcare workers and a patient. Several others remain in critical condition.

The haemorrhagic fever outbreak is believed to have originated from the management of a patient with a febrile illness, suspected to be the index case, who was admitted to the hospital ten days ago.

Tragically, the index patient also succumbed to the illness while at the hospital, exhibiting symptoms consistent with febrile illness.

The three health workers tragically passed away within 48 hours.

The management of the 44 Army Hospital by the Acting Corps Commander of the Nigerian Army Medical Corps, Brigadier General S.O Okoigi announced the development on Wednesday.

It has therefore shut down the accident and emergency department of the hospital for thorough disinfection.

Also, samples have been taken from suspected contacts and the deceased and sent to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in Kano State for further examination.
