The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has declared a nationwide indefinite strike, set to commence on October 27, 2024, in response to the non-payment of four months’ withheld salaries.

This decision follows growing frustration over the federal government’s failure to release the withheld funds, despite an initial commitment from President Bola Tinubu to disburse 50% of the owed salaries.

Union leaders have expressed concerns regarding the Minister of Finance’s lack of further action, casting doubt on the government’s dedication to resolving the issue.

In a circular addressing their members, the JAC urged all branch chairpersons of NASU and SSANU to prepare for the impending strike.

The initial strike date was postponed to facilitate a Trade Group Council meeting held at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, on October 23 and 24.

The circular stated, “It is on record that JAC of NASU and SSANU has issued multiple notices to the government to redress this ugly situation. However, the sincerity of government to our cause is in doubt.”

The leadership added, “We have to do this strategic change in timing for effective coordination and for both Unions to be on the same page.”

Union officials reaffirmed their commitment to advocating for their members, emphasizing that they will persist until they achieve their goals.

“We express our deepest appreciation for your steadfast commitment to the leadership and we affirm our determination to persist in this struggle until ultimate victory is secured,” the circular added.
