A former Italian footballer has been sentenced to life in prison for brutally murdering his ex-girlfriend after she reported him to the police for stalking.

Giovanni Padovani, a 28-year-old former centre-back, attacked Alessandra Matteuzzi outside her home in Bologna on August 23, 2022.

The horrific attack, which involved the use of a hammer, shocked the nation. Despite surviving the initial assault, Matteuzzi later succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.

The court heard that Padovani had flown to Bologna and waited outside her home, despite being instructed by his team to stay away from a training session.

The judge emphasized Padovani’s predatory behavior and the premeditated nature of the attack as aggravating factors in sentencing him to life imprisonment.
