Italy’s head coach, Luciano Spalletti, has shouldered full responsibility for their premature exit from Euro 2024 after a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in the first knockout round. Speaking at a post-match press conference, Spalletti candidly admitted that the team’s failure was due to his team selection rather than the players’ performance.
“I take full responsibility,” Spalletti stated. “We fell short because of my decisions on team selection; it was not the fault of the players.”
Reflecting on the tournament, Spalletti lamented the lack of preparation time with the squad, highlighting the disparity compared to other national teams.

“All other coaches had 30 or more matches to prepare with their teams before the tournament began,” Spalletti remarked. “I only had 10, and that certainly affected our performance.”
Despite the disappointment, Spalletti expressed regret over not having sufficient time to familiarize himself with the players, which he believed played a crucial role in their early elimination from the competition.
