Kano State has retitled both its Sports Institute and Sports Commission as a mark of respect to the 22 athletes who died in a crash on May 30 en route back from the 22nd National Sports Festival in Abeokuta.

They will now be referred to as the Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Commission and the Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Institute.

This is to ensure that their valour and sacrifice remain perpetually remembered.
At the ceremony at the Government House in Kano, Governor Abba Yusuf expressed genuine pride before the audience.
He proceeded to reveal their steadfast spirits:
“These young heroes made Kano proud. They should be remembered forever. Their commitment and sacrifice to the state will not be forgotten.”
First Lady Remi Tinubu presented ₦110 million to the bereaved families during a condolence visit headed by Hajiya Laila Barau Jibrin, the Deputy Senate President’s wife.
Moreso, Governor Yusuf personally thanked her and pointed out her prior donation of ₦200 million to 250 elderly women in Kano.
Governor Yusuf plans to establish a strong committee to ensure the cash reaches the appropriate families.
Moreover, this legislation, along with the rebranding of the sporting organisations, reinforces the state’s commitment to preserving the legacy of its deceased athletes.
