Hourihane omitted the 27-year-old from the squad all summer.
Nwakali missed pre-season and early fixtures after a delayed return from Nigeria that the club linked to a family matter.
Asked about his future ahead of Tuesday’s clash with Peterborough United, Hourihane said:
“Yeah, that’ll be the plan. We are looking to move him on. No. It’s still the same scenario and thought process. We’re still pinpointing areas we need to improve. Hopefully if we can get that done between now and the end of the window we’ll be in a decent place.” – he added.
Nwakali played 26 times for Barnsley last season but slipped out of favour toward the end of the campaign.
Barnsley has not said whether they will send him out on loan or sell him permanently.
A former Arsenal signing, Kelechi Nwakali never appeared for Arsenal’s senior side.
He spent time on loan in the Netherlands and Portugal, left Huesca amid a 2022 dispute, and later turned out for Ponferradina and Chaves before joining Barnsley.
As it is now, his next move remains uncertain.
