President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima have met with State Governors and Minister Nyesom Wike economic crisis and insecurity.

The meeting was held at the State House in Abuja on Thursday and attended by all 36 state governors.

The gathering was prompted by pressing concerns, including the escalating prices of food items and the prevailing insecurity across the nation.

During the extensive deliberations, the attendees reached a consensus to address the challenges head-on.

Here are some key points from the meeting:

Addressing Insecurity and Enhancing Food Production:
– President Tinubu proposed three critical measures:

  • Recruitment of More Police Personnel: To strengthen law enforcement.

  • State Police Mechanism:

The Federal Government will collaborate with state governors and the National Assembly to establish a state police system, replacing vigilantes in some states.

  • Strengthening Forest Rangers:

He urged governors to equip and arm forest rangers to ensure safety in wooded areas.

Modalities for state police and security discussions will be further explored at the National Economic Council.

  1. Rising Food Costs:
    The President encouraged collaboration between state and federal governments to boost local food production.

Importation and price controls were discouraged, with an emphasis on supporting local food producers.

  1. Dealing with Food Hoarding:
    Following Kano State’s example, the President directed authorities (including the Inspector-General of Police, National Security Adviser, and Department of State Services) to monitor warehouses hoarding food items and prevent profiteering.

  2. Livestock Development:
    He charged governors to focus on livestock development, particularly poultry and fishing.

  3. Clearing Salary Arrears and Gratuity:
    Tinubu urged governors to prioritize clearing salary arrears, gratuities, and pensions to benefit citizens.

  4. Youth Economic Opportunities:
    The President encouraged governors to create more economic opportunities for the youth in their respective states.
