Senator Karimi Sunday (APC Kogi-West) has proposed an unprecedented approach to tackling insurgency, suggesting that Nigerian lawmakers should take the lead in the fight against Boko Haram by joining the military on the battlefield.

During Thursday’s Senate debate, Senator Sunday argued that it was no longer sufficient for lawmakers to merely pass resolutions or criticize the government’s handling of the security crisis.

He emphasized that senators, as leaders of the country, should actively support the military’s efforts in the field.

“Our military is overwhelmed, and they are doing their best. As part of the federal government, we must go beyond offering support from the sidelines. We should be on the battlefield with them,” Sunday said.

He referenced the example set by former Chadian President Idriss Déby, who personally led his country’s forces in the fight against insurgents.

Sunday clarified that while he did not expect President Bola Tinubu to take on such a role, he urged senators to step up and contribute directly to the war effort.

“We can do our part by physically supporting the military in the fight against Boko Haram,” he added.

Also, Senator Sunday suggested that lawmakers could also leverage their zonal intervention project funds to provide security infrastructure in their local communities.
