A labourer, El-Kanan Emmanuel, was sentenced to three years in prison by a Jos Upper Area Court sitting in Kasuwan Nama on Monday for stealing 60 litres of kerosene.

After the offender pled guilty to the two-count allegation of theft and trespass, the judge, Mr Lawal Suleiman, handed down the punishment.

Suleiman, on the other hand, offered the offender the alternative of paying a N100,000 fee instead of serving three years in prison.

The matter was reported to the Mista Ali Police Station on Aug. 25 by John Bulus, according to the Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Ibrahim Gokwat.

According to Bulus the shop owner, the criminal broke into his shop and took his 60 litres of kerosene.

The defendant Gokwat, admitted to committing the crime during the police investigation.

The offence, according to the prosecution, violated Sections 334 and 272 of the Plateau State Penal Code Law in Northern Nigeria.
