Many Feared Dead as 4-Storey Building Collapses in A’Ibom

Several persons have been feared killed following the collapse of a four-storey building in Akwa Ibom.

Daily Report reports that many others are also trapped in the incident which occured on Saturday at Imam Street, off Aka Road, Uyo Uyo, the state capital.

A source told newsmen that most of the victims killed or still trapped under the concrete rubble are workers at the site.

The source said;

“This incident happened about 5pm today (Saturday) and people mostly construction workers are still trapped inside.”

The incident was confirmed by the Akwa Ibom Police Public Relations Officer, Odiko Macdon, who could not give exact figure of the victims.

Macdon said the Commissioner of Police, Olatoye Durosinmi, had ordered the deployment of officers to the scene to safeguard lives and property.

He said;

“Yes I can confirm that we have received the report of a collapsed building. The Commissioner of Police has ordered the deployment of officers to the area to ensure the protection of lives and property.

“As we speak we do not have the number of casualties yet, and we do not know the immediate and remote cause of the incident. However, I want to assure the people of Akwa Ibom that we will keep them informed about developments.”
