However, Nashville responded through Cristian Espinoza, whose equaliser ensured Miami were eliminated from the competition despite Messi’s historic goal.

With the strike, Messi becomes only the second male footballer to reach the 900-goal mark, joining long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo. The Argentine achieved the feat in 1,142 matches, fewer than Ronaldo’s 1,236 games.

Football legend Pelé remains third on the all-time scorers’ list with 765 goals.

A breakdown of Messi’s tally shows 672 goals scored during his time at FC Barcelona, 32 with Paris Saint-Germain, 81 for Inter Miami, and 115 for the Argentine national team.

Despite the team’s exit, Messi’s latest achievement further cements his legacy as one of the greatest footballers in history.
